| The New York Tennis Club, established in 1886, is the oldest tennis club in New York.
The member-owned club was established in what was then the spacious fields of upper Manhattan at 180th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. As the city grew, the club changed locations three times in search of better accommodations and less congestion as construction began encroaching on its space.
It came to its present location on Harding Avenue many years ago in the highly desirable area of Throggs Neck, hailed as one of the most pleasant areas in New York.
Since its inception, the club's popularity has grown steadily as word spread of its fine facilities and its primary concern for the comfort to its members. As host of many tournaments it was, at one time, the favored sports refuge of such luminaries as Theodore Roosevelt, George M. Cohan, George & Ira Gershwin, Babe Didrikson, Fanny Brice, Jimmy Walker and Walter Winchell.
Throughout the years it has maintained its reputation for its restful, laid-back atmosphere, the congeniality of its members and its professional approach to what has become a truly popular sport.
